The networks at a glance
- Vumatel — largest open-access network in SA. Strongest coverage in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban suburbs. Aggressive rollout into townships under the Vuma Reach 20/20 product (free 20 Mbps line).
- Openserve — Telkom's wholesale network. Widest footprint nationally (incl. small towns), but typically rolled out a few years behind Vumatel in major metros.
What actually differs
For a 100 Mbps uncapped line via Afrihost (same ISP, both networks):
- Vumatel: R699/month, 4ms avg latency to JINX, 99.95% uptime.
- Openserve: R747/month, 6ms avg latency to JINX, 99.92% uptime.
Real-world difference for streaming/work: negligible. Real-world difference for online gaming: noticeable but not game-breaking.
Coverage rules
Check both. About 35% of SA addresses have a choice between the two; the rest are single-network. Always run a coverage check on at least two ISPs before signing a 12-month contract.
